Wintergreen - Gaultheria procumbens

Bright red berries in fall and winter, and an ability to thrive in shade, make Wintergreen a valuable addition to a perennial garden. Usually forming a low shrub or spreading groundcover, it prefers moist, acidic, organically rich soil. Resistant to many pests and diseases, this North American native is very adaptable to the eastern U.S. As an added bonus, the crushed leaves are said to have a pleasant wintergreen smell, and the berries are eaten by local wildlife.
