Turk's cap mallow (Malvaviscus arboreus var. drummondii) is a wonderful addition to a hummingbird-friendly flowerbed. From summer until frost, it produces an abundance of red flowers that just drive the hummingbirds crazy. It dies back to the ground in winter, but makes up for it when it grows to a 5-foot wide bush during summer. It is somewhat drought and heat tolerant once established, and can handle a variety of soil types and light situations. Native to the southeastern U.S., this plant is well-equipped to handle a hot humid summer. Also called: Drummond's Turk's Cap, Wax mallow, Texas mallow
