With its clusters of delicate red flowers and tough leaves, stiff bottlebrush is a great choice for adding a bit of color to a southern or coastal landscape. Like other myrtle family members, bottlebrush is a superb plant for dealing with heat, humidity, and occasional dry weather. The growth is fast and rather bushy, but it can be trimmed into a tree or even an espalier. It can get rather large if left unchecked, maxing out at 8 feet tall and wide, and is damaged by severe cold, which is why it's only recommended for planting in the ground in zones 9 (maybe 8) to 11. It can, however, be planted in a pot for northern gardeners, and placed inside during the winter.
