Salvia 'Black and Blue' (Salvia guarantica) is a heavy blooming deciduous perennial with light green leaves, dark stems and dark purple/blue blooms. A hummingbird favorite, it will quickly form a 3 x 3-foot wide clump that produces flowers all summer long. It works well in the middle and back of flower beds where it can send up blooming stalks without covering up shorter plants. A perennial in zones 7-10, it can be treated as an annual in colder climates. I did read that some people dig up the tubers to save the plants in colder planting zones, but I haven't tried that.
