A deciduous native azalea, Piedmont or Mountain Azalea puts on a real show in early spring with its pink and white flowers that bloom in bunches before the leaves appear. This specimen was collected from a shaded bank along a creek, and this tells you this plant prefers constant moisture, but with a well-drained soil. It can get quite tall if allowed, but it would be easy to maintain the size with trimming. Deer do browse this plant, but for pets and people, like the Japanese azalea, it is poisonous.
