Hibiscus aculeatus is a shrubby perennial hibiscus native to the southeastern U.S. It prefers wet pine forests or areas that have standing water for part of the year, but does fine in a garden setting. The large (3-4") yellow flowers have an attractive maroon eye, and are visited by bees and butterflies. Much like other fine-haired plants, the small hairs on the branches can be uncomfortable if allowed to stick in the skin. In winter, the plant dies back to the ground and remains dormant until spring.
